Sodepur flyover to shut every weekend from July 19 for urgent structural repairs
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), headquartered in Amritsar, has written a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanding strict legal action against Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, former West Bengal state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The SGPC has alleged that Majumdar hurled a shoe at a serving Sikh police officer in Kolkata, reportedly targeting the officer’s turban during the incident.
The SGPC, a statutory religious body constituted under the Sikh Gurdwaras Act, 1925, stated that the act had hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikh community. In its letter, SGPC emphasized that the incident occurred in the capital city of West Bengal and involved a uniformed officer. It described the alleged act as disgraceful and unacceptable, especially coming from a political figure.
According to the letter, an FIR has already been lodged against Dr. Majumdar by the Secretary of Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Kalighat, Kolkata. The complaint pertains to the same incident, which the SGPC has cited while pressing for action. The SGPC urged that legal provisions should be applied against Majumdar for his conduct, which they consider to be in violation of the law.
The SGPC said it is the responsibility of the state to protect all communities and ensure respect for religious symbols, such as the Sikh turban. In the memorandum, the SGPC requested the West Bengal Chief Minister to take appropriate legal steps against the accused individual to uphold law and order and prevent any recurrence of such incidents.
The letter was signed by the Secretary of SGPC and issued from its headquarters at Teja Singh Samundri Hall, Sri Amritsar. The organization reiterated that it would continue to monitor the issue and expected a firm response from the state administration in accordance with legal procedure.
